“As an entrepreneur and former
IT professional, I know the risks that
IT professionals run”.

My interest in computers and technology has been there since childhood. I learned what insurance is from my father. In 1992, he started an office as an independent insurance agent. While I was studying computer science at the HoGent, he started offering insurance products from different insurers as a broker.

After graduating as an industrial engineer, I could immediately start working at ING. My first major project was to build a web portal that allowed employers to manage the group insurance policies for their employees. It was probably no coincidence that the world of insurance crossed my path again. It wasn’t the last time, either, as I subsequently worked in various roles (developer, analyst, project and team leader) on various insurance-related applications.

Advising IT companies without knowledge of IT is risky business

After six years, I could no longer resist the urge to be an entrepreneur and I started to develop my father’s estate agency. Thanks to my contacts with IT professionals, I knew that the search for a suitable policy for IT professionals was often not easy. I came into contact with entrepreneurs who had not or had too late come to the conclusion that they were insufficiently covered against the specific risks of their profession.

The lack of insurance policies that are sufficiently geared to their activity appears to be only part of the problem. What is worse, traditional insurance advisers often have little understanding of the risks that IT professionals face. And then it is very difficult to advise clients adequately. Let alone that they can urge insurers to adjust their standard policies.

A sharper offer and cheaper thanks to specialisation

That is why I started with a systematic comparison of policies to analyse how insurance companies deal with IT risks, line by line and article by article. This way, I could perfectly separate the wheat from the chaff. When I made it clear to insurers that I wanted to specialise, I found a number of them willing to fine-tune their policies, take on extra risks and allow favourable pricing.

Besides the pleasure of combining my passion for IT and insurance, since then I also get satisfaction from helping entrepreneurs to find concrete answers for the risks they run. Perhaps that is the best way to describe what Certibit stands for.
